Public Safety / Criminal Justice System

“The #1 function of government is to ensure the  safety of the people.”
  • Target the top 400 repeat offenders and keep them behind bars

  • Stop the revolving door of career criminals by keeping a constant flow of cases tried – no more continuances, dismissals and plea bargains

  • Demand accountability for the money given by the city to the prosecutorial segment of the criminal justice system

  • Fund preventative programs to provide choices beyond a life of crime.

Economic Growth / Jobs
“Charlotte must remain competitive. When city taxes and regulations compare unfavorably with surrounding regions, businesses can vote with their feet.”
  • Cut government red tape to facilitate businesses coming to Charlotte

  • Keep the regulatory burden to a minimum. Any proposed regulation should meet a rigorous test of cost-benefit analysis

  • Create a customer-service oriented culture in city government

  • Support specific parameters that help recruit jobs in biotech, manufacturing and from Fortune 500 Companies

  • Create an environment which addresses the needs of small businesses and promotes entrepreneurial growth by:

    1. Endorsing the continuation of the Qualified Business Venture State Tax Credit which provides 25% of personal state income tax relief on investments in small businesses.
    2. Supporting the implementation of the Founders Stock State Tax Credit which provides an exemption on capital gains for founders and early investors when they sell, merge, or otherwise exit their ventures.

Taxes and Spending
Just as individuals and families are making sacrifices and prioritizing their budgets, so must Charlotte City government.”
  • Control wasteful spending through zero-based budgeting

  • No property tax increase – City must function within its means

  • “No” to the Transfer Tax

  • Provide transparency of the City budget; budget information needs to be easily accessed on the Internet

Transportation
“Congestion threatens our economy, we must keep people moving by having a sound transportation plan and road system.”
  • Encourage flex-time, ridesharing and work-at-home programs

  • Improve intersection turns and synchronized signal systems

  • Use innovative highway and intersection designs

  • Continue to lobby Raleigh for our fair share of transportation dollars in order to complete the loop and widen the lanes on the southern portion of the loop.

 Environment
“We must be good stewards of our planet; it is our legacy to future generations.”
  • Support Clean Air Works program – a public / private sector collaboration to educate and encourage air quality initiatives

  • Ensure that Charlotte’s drinking water consistently meets regulatory standards

  • Support energy policy that includes clean-coal technology and nuclear energy

  • Support sidewalk and bike path policies to expand choices in mobility

  • Preserve Charlotte’s tree canopy through continuation of Tree Ordinance

  • Support public / private sector efforts to increase recycling participation
